NZ MUSIC MONTH AT TE PAPA
4 May 2009
1)
New Zealand Music Month with Pacific Curls
Date: Sunday 3 May, 2009
Time: 2pm–3pm
Location: The Marae, Level 4
Admission: Free entry
Celtic fiddle, ukulele, and taonga püoro (traditional Mäori musical instruments) combine to create this high-energy trio’s unique style of world roots music.
Pacific Curls never set out to be a trio. Four years ago, they and two other musicians recorded a fusion album in an Auckland studio. They had little idea that after two European tours and several in Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, and Canada, they would be the last three members standing.
The trio’s unique combination of fiddle, ukulele, taonga püoro, guitar, stomp peddles, percussion, and vocals, with lyrics in Mäori, Rotuman, and English, forges a new direction for fusion world music.
Pacific Curls are:
Kim Halliday – guitar, ukulele, kalimba, percussion, vocals
Ora Barlow – taonga püoro, ukulele, percussion, vocals
Sarah Beattie – fiddle

3)
New Zealand Music Month with Harriet and the Matches
Date: Saturday 16 May 2009
Time: 12.30pm–1.30pm
Location: The Marae, Level 4
Admission: Free entry
Long-time musical companions Jessie Moss and Amiria Grenell formed Harriet and the Matches in 2005. The duo’s energetic and original style is a delightful mix of ballad, contemporary folk, reggae, and soul-inspired songs. The music features rhythms pounded out on a traditional Irish bodhran (frame drum), and there is a strong emphasis on tight vocal harmonies.
“They offer soulful vocal performances and enchanting original tunes, accompanied by guitar, drums and stomping feet” – Dunedin Fringe Festival
Harriet and the Matches released their debut EP Ata Takahi in 2005, and their full-length album Wandering paths was released in March 2008.
