Nathan King’s Basement Performance

21 May 2009

New Zealand Music Month always generates a few strange gigs and Life FM’s “Bands in the Basement” series is a case in point. Nathan King usually plays with a four or five piece band in locations like the Vector Arena or the Christchurch Town Hall (where he played recently with Welsh Artist, Duffy). But this May he rolled up to the Life FM studio to play in their basement studio and spent the afternoon on-air.

Nathan King is one of New Zealand’s best pop/rock singer-songwriters. His solo career started after the successful band, Zed, wrapped up in 2005. His first solo album took until 2008 to emerge however as Nathan took time to work out his own sound. The album, which includes current hit “The Saddest Thing” was well worth waiting for.

“I felt like it [music] was in the blood. I wasn’t just going to stop and turn off the song-writing switch,” says Nathan, explaining why he didn’t move to a desk job after the end of Zed.

Life FM filmed Nathan King’s NZ Music Month gig in their basement and you can watch two of the songs he performed – ‘Wake Up” and “Never Too Late” on youtube.com. Simply search for “Bands in the Basement.”
