NZ Music Month Competition Winners Announced

2 June 2009

Christchurch couple Catherine and Gideon Hoekendijk, six year old Ohope resident, Hannah Everett, and David Orpin from the Acacia Cove Retirement Village in Manurewa, have won New Zealand’s Rhema’s “Live at Yours” NZ Music Month competition. Free concerts by top New Zealand musicians will now be held in the winners local communities this Friday and Saturday to cap off NZ Music Month.

All Catherine and Gideon, Hannah and David had to do to win was email NZ’s Rhema or Southern Star and tell them why their community “would be the best place for your Kiwi Artist to play”.

Catherine and Gideon Hoekendijk wrote to NZ’s Rhema about their enthusiasm for the local community. The Christchurch concert will feature one-time southern girl Hannah Donald and her husband Stephen James, performing on 29 May, 7:30pm at Oaklands School Hall (on Cunningham Drive). Hannah Donald released her debut album Unfinished Journey in 2007 which had two number one hits on Christian radio. She has performed throughout the country including at Parachute Music Festival and major international sporting events. Hannah is currently working on a new album.

Hannah Everett wrote to NZ’s Rhema hoping she might just win. Thanks to her, break-through artist Luke Thompson, will be going to Whakatane to perform on 30 May at 7pm at Whakatane Baptist Church (76 Alexander Ave). Luke, who had already had radio success with his singles ‘Morning Light’ and ‘Perfect Drive’, began work on his first album in 2007. Both singles made it onto the album, called Here on the Ground, which was produced by Nic Manders (Brooke Fraser, Goldenhorse).

David Orpin won after emailing Southern Star to tell them that he hoped many of the 300 residents of the Acacia Cove Christian Fellowship would come along to a concert if he won. Now, thanks to David and Southern Star, the residents will have the opportunity to attend when Rob Innes performs live at Acacia Cove Retirement Village on 30 May at 2:30pm

Rob Innes has lived in New Zealand since 1958. In1969, he appeared on New Zealand television's talent show Studio One. After a short singing career Rob went back to being a typical Kiwi bloke but, 25 years later, Rob decided to pick up the singing career that he had abandoned. Since returning to singing Rob has built a strong following and has released several albums.

NZ’s Rhema and Southern Star are part of the Rhema Broadcasting Group, the country’s largest 100% New Zealand owned private broadcaster. The “Live at Yours” competition has been made possible thanks to funding from New Zealand On Air.
