“WHAT DOES KIWI FM DO FOR MUSIC MONTH?” THE RETURN OF 31 BANDS IN A BOX

7 April 2009

Kiwi FM is delighted to announce that “31 Bands In A Box” will be returning for May, 2009.

The series debuted last year as Kiwi’s answer to the question “what can a station that already
plays 100% New Zealand music do for Music Month?”

“31 Bands In A Box” was a promise to have at least one act playing live-to-air in the (box-like)
Kiwi FM studio for each of the thirty-one days of Music Month. By the time June rolled around
forty-five acts had participated – including Autozamm, The Bads, Batucada Sound Machine,
Charlie Ash, Chris Knox, Clap Clap Riot, dDub, Electric Confectionaires, Flip Grater, Minuit,
Moana Maniapoto, Motocade, Olmecha Supreme, Opshop, Reb Fountain, Sam Flynn-Scott,
Side Kick Nick, Steve Abel and Tahuna Breaks.

“Live performances are one of our favourite parts of Kiwi’s repertoire,” according to
Programme Director Michael Higgins. “Playing recordings by New Zealand artists – and
interviewing them – are both hugely gratifying but we’re never happier than when an act
comes up and plays live. It also offers the acts a choice. For some it’s a live set – for others it’s
a chance to strip back and offer a different perspective on what they do. Both approaches
work very well.”

Live footage was an integral part of 31 Bands in 2008 – and this year as many of the
performances as possible will be shot and posted on a dedicated page on the station’s
website at www.kiwifm.co.nz – and on You Tube.

Kiwi FM is delighted to welcome MagnumMac as sponsor of “31 Bands In a Box” for 2009. “This
is an ideal partnership,” says Higgins. “MagnumMac is a company with a commitment to the
creative industries and Kiwi looks forward to integrating Mac technology into the production
of 31 Bands”.
