One of Flying Nun Record’s first new signings since it’s re-purchase by founder Roger Shepherd, Grayson Gilmour, has teamed up with the re-launched label for his latest album No Constellation. We could tell a story about some kid who turns to music during their early teens in an effort to save themselves from the boredom of swampy small town New Zealand.
A couple of albums later they pack their bags for the big smoke, chasing the dream, etc etc... But, essentially, No Constellation is a carefully crafted album - not to mention one that has an uncanny knack of revealing haunting melodies and catchy pop hooks in all the right places. Written and performed (for the most part) by Gilmour over the course of 2009, the album was recorded in various locales from bedrooms to studios and his mum’s house.
All up, it is a culmination of ideas gathered over the last two-years - much of which the Wellington-based musician spent touring overseas with his other band So So Modern. The album’s first single ‘Loose Change’ was released at the end of last year, and, its music video was nominated for a Handle the Jandal award. Now, with a bit of help from Flying Nun Records, the full album will be released on May 10 in New Zealand on compact disc, digital download and limited edition vinyl, all accompanied by a hand-crafted lyric zine.
Furthermore, to celebrate and commemorate the release of No Constellation, Grayson Gilmour and his band of merry musicians will be traveling the length and breadth of the country throughout May, on what is commonly referred to as an album tour.
