To add to the excitement, the entire school will be treated to a lunchtime concert. “It really is a wonderful gesture,” say Villa Maria College Principal Mary Lynch. “We’re delighted to be able to host talented female musicians from around our city and encourage them to aim high.”

Music Works has also announced it will give a $1000 Schecter guitar to one lucky school taking part in the workshop.

Education Manager of New Zealand Music, Stephanie Lees says that “we decided we would pull together students from many schools for a day of joy and music and this was something practical we could do. The day is part of theComission’s Musicians Mentoring in Schools Programme.

More girls need to ROCK

Stephanie Lees believes more girls need to develop confidence and participate in school band competitions. “We’re very aware of the continued imbalance of female musicians in the school band competitions and hope this will feed into higher participation and confidence. We see so many very talented young women in the classrooms when our mentors visit them but they are still not coming through into the band competitions in great numbers.”
