New Zealand Music Month, May 2018

London-based New Zealand alt-rock artist, Johnny Brock is proud to release his debut record LABRADOR.

Inspired largely by his self-diagnosed ‘quarter life crisis’ and first brush with mental illness, LABRADOR is an honest reflection on a difficult life experience.

‘I knew honesty was essential for me going into the writing process. I knew it wouldn’t help me, or others, if I sugar-coated it for myself. Even if that meant writing things that made me cringe a little.’

The record covers a range of themes through the lenses of depression and anxiety from the typical millennial fear of being left behind by your peers in opening track IF I FALL IN LOVE, to the frustration of observing loved ones going through tough times in THIS IS NOT A TEST. While it’s definitely a journey through some dark mental places, Johnny is sure to include moments of victory and positive reflection.

Musically, Johnny lets his years of experience show, often using unconventional song structures to keep the record interesting. A simple sound palette of guitars, bass, drums, and vocals give the record a consistency and solid platform to showcase his clever writing. Johnny offers heavy-hitting arrangements to match the lyrical intensity on offer, giving moments to catch your breath before taking another plunge.

The album was recorded at a handful of small project studios around Auckland, New Zealand, by Kiwi producer Keegan Meiring, and mastered by Brian Lucey (Arctic Monkeys, AM / The Black Keys, El Camino) in Los Angeles.

‘We knew from the start that this was going to be a guitar record and so it was a real dream come true to work with Brian on the album. We loved the big guitar sounds of AM (Arctic Monkeys) and El Camino (The Black Keys) and knew he would be the perfect fit.

This Is Not A Test

I Don’t Need To See This Through

Other Lives

Reasons After Reasons

If I Fall In Love

I Was Afraid

After half a lifetime of touring, performing, and writing with some of New Zealand’s most talented artists and songwriters (Avalanche City, Great North, Farah Loux, Joseph & Maia, Shannon Fowler of Tom Lark, and PleasePlease), multi-instrumentalist Johnny Brock recognized 2017 was the right time to take a step towards center stage, and begin releasing original music under his own name.

His alternative indie-rock songs combine raw guitar energy with distressingly honest lyrics and his reflective delivery to create eerily beautiful soundscapes. Complex in personality and simple in composition, his music serves to both haunt and encourage his audience.
