New Zealand Music Month, May 2011

The first music event in New Zealand where you can smell, taste, see and feel the music

10 May 2011

Auckland is getting ready for the New Zealand premiere of the international hit music event Sencity, complete with the country’s first vibrating dance floor.

On 20 May 2011, “The Studio” on K’Road will host this unique event, which translates the emotion of the music into all five senses making it not only accessible for hearing but also for Deaf visitors.

The Sencity concept was developed by the Dutch non-profit organization Skyway Foundation in 2003 and since the inaugural event more than 28 Sencity events have been held around the world attracting more than 10,000 participants.

According to Skyway Foundation’s global vision for social integration, the organisation wants to inspire people and show them that if you really “go for it” activities which seemed impossible initially, are in reality accessible.

“Skyway gives young individuals the possibility to explore their talents,” says Skyway NZ project leader Lisa Steiof.

“ In the different countries that we are involved in a “Tense Team” is created, consisting of enthusiastic members of the local Deaf community who, in cooperation with the Skyway Team, lead the creative process”.

Lisa says the five senses are stimulated at the music event by having  taste sensations, an aroma jockey, a vibrating dance floor,  video projections, light effects and sign interpreters.    Make-up artists and hairdressers help with visual effects, transforming the music event into an overall sensory experience.

People will be able to both Feel the music on New Zealand’s very first vibrating dance floor, which converts the beats of the music into vibrations, and experience temperature changes along with the heat of the music,” says Lisa.

“In order to see the music our video jockeys and light experts will allow participants to immerse into a world of visual stimuli, while Aroma Jockey Raewyn Turner will match the music with smells that will be spread simultaneously with the performances and the food and drink sensations will give you the taste of sound, feeling, vision and aromas. Relax after a hard day of work and get a free massage or be styled by our make-up artists and hairstylists.”

In New Zealand the theme of the event is “Sencity Elements” , as it connects the event to the four elements of the majestic nature of the country and Auckland.

“Think about volcanoes (fire), the Sky tower (air), sailing (water) and the many parks (earth). Be immersed into an atmosphere that combines music, lights, smells, flavours and feeling to make you experience the elements in a whole new way,” says Lisa.

Taking place during New Zealand Music Month the 20 May event will feature the solo artist Josh Leys, Ruby Frost with drummer and New Zealand’s top DJs including Daniel Farley, Sean Lenium Farhmand, Mitch Lowe, Sikander 'Alexq' Gore and Claudia Leeming.

The New Zealand pop talent, Ruby Frost, will surprise you with her unique style. Having been involved in singing her whole life, she won the MTV 42 Unheard Competition in 2009 and her debut single “Moonlight” has been in the radio station's Top 10 for ten consecutive weeks.

Music producer and radio show host for George FM, Daniel Farley has been voted the number 1 Electro-House DJ in New Zealand at the Nite:Life awards in 2010 but his spectrum of sounds and influences goes much beyond that.

All the activities on the event will be included in the ticket price, which go on sale on 28March and can be bought through 1-night.co.nz or at Real Groovy, Conch Records or Beat Merchants.

Lisa says the event was made possible thanks to support from interpreter service, iSign, vibrating dance floor from simparts, make-up from Samala Robinson Academy, hairdressing from Servilles and massages from myohealth. This project was facilitated by the networks, services and support of Deaf Aotearoa New Zealand.
