Dunedin’s wealth of multi-talented musicians will be looking to please everyone on Sunday, 1 May with a wildly diverse range of musical styles at the first ever Nook & Cranny Music Festival at the Dunedin City Library.
There will be over 50 different performances, plus a rock singing workshop, song-writing seminar and talks by Dunedin’s iconic rockers Graeme Downes and Martin Phillipps.
“We want to put on an event that should appeal to everyone, young and old, no matter what their musical tastes” says Libraries’ Events Coordinator, Kay Mercer.
“Our performers range in age from emerging teen musicians to well-established and experienced bands who everyone will recognise, and we’re running the gamut from lyrical acoustic sessions and jazz on the baby grand, to full rock, folk and indie sets.”
The line-up was put together by The Mentalist Collective’s Brendan Christie, with the support of Dunedinmusic.com and Strawberry Sound, and is a chance for people to enjoy a full programme of free performances at the start of New Zealand’s month-long celebration of Kiwi music.
“When we started talking about the concept of a music festival with Dunedin Public Libraries, I had the idea that it would be great to surprise people with performances in unexpected places”, says Mr Christie.
“So expect to find music in all the nooks and crannies, all over the Library. We want people to be led up through the building in search of the next performance. Some will be scheduled on the programme, so you’ll know where to find them, and some you’ll just come across as you walk around.”
“Imagine being serenaded by a gentle guitar ballad while you’re browsing through the cookbooks,” says Mrs Mercer.
There will also be regular gig nights at City Library on Thursdays, throughout the month, as well as performances at the community libraries by bands, soloists and school groups. To round out Music Month, everyone is invited to a grand finale gig night at City Library on 31 May. See here for full details, or pick up a programme at your local library and other venues around the city.
