Homegrown Ōtautahi musicians are front and center on Plains FM’s latest project Ōtautahi Music Hour.

Plains FM, Christchurch’s community access media radio station, has long championed the voices of its communities. In celebration of New Zealand Music Month, the station has dedicated two prime hour slots at 8 am every Wednesday and Thursday to exclusively feature music from Ōtautahi bands and musicians. This initiative not only showcases the vibrant local music scene but also provides a platform for emerging and established artists to reach a wider audience.

As part of Ōtautahi Music Hour, listeners can enjoy short interviews with artists releasing new music or looking to promote their existing catalogs. This behind-the-scenes glimpse adds a personal touch to the broadcast, connecting audiences with the stories and inspirations behind the music.

“Personally, as a listener, I was blown away by the quality of the music being made by musicians right here in Christchurch. It was exciting to hear some bands I already knew and to listen to some new music!” says Pia, content coordinator at Plains FM. “By curating these Ōtautahi Music Hours we are excited to showcase the talent of diverse musicians making music in our own backyard.”

Plains FM has partnered with RDU 98.5 FM, a student radio station, and SaltBox Studios to further support youth and upcoming artists. SaltBox Studios, known for its high-quality recordings, will provide exclusive live-to-air sessions, capturing the raw energy and talent of artists and bands in the studio. This unique perspective gives listeners a deeper appreciation of the artist’s sound and style.
