Today marks the start of TE MARAMA PUORO O AOTEAROA 2024 - NZ Music Month -  with AMPLIFYING AOTEAROA | PAOROTIA AOTEAROA the key theme across this year’s event. The month of May will shine a light on those who are the heartbeat of our nation’s music scene, celebrating everyone who makes our incredible music and helps amplify tunes from across Aotearoa.

There is loads of news to share today and in the coming weeks. Keep an eye on our socials for special announcements - like a very exciting competition with AS Colour we have going live later this week.

This Friday is NZ Music T-Shirt Day! On 3 May you can help raise funds for the amazing work of MusicHelps by wearing your favourite NZ artist tee and getting others to sponsor you by donating to MusicHelps. You can sign up here and even create a team - scroll down to see the leaderboard of who the star fundraisers are so far this year.

WHAT'S ON THIS WEEK

NZ Post have a very cool collectable stamp set being issued today - the Split Enz True Colours collection. There are individual stamps alongside stamp sheets, pins, and even postcards with pre-paid postage to anywhere in the world. Be quick though - there is sure to be a lot of interest!

The NZ Music Commission and City Rail Link Ltd aligned to bring something extra special to help launch NZMM, with Aotearoa singer and beatmaker Geneva AM becoming the first ever artist to perform underground in the country’s largest transport infrastructure. Geneva AM performed waiata, including  her new single Pikipiki, which is out today. To check out the performance and see the gallery of imagery, head to nzmusiccomission.org.nz. Award winning concert film Tiki Taane In Session with the CSO is coming to TVNZ+ in celebration of Te Marama Puoro o Aotearoa. Originally filmed during NZ Music Month 2021, the concert documentary will be available for viewing online from May 1. Stream it here.

2024 Ngā Manu Tīrairaka | NZ Children’s Music Awards are coming up this Sunday 5 May. Presented by Recorded Music NZ, APRA AMCOS NZ, and NZ On Air, the Awards have the support of Kiwi Kids Music, the national association of children’s songwriters, creators and producers. Winners will be announced at an invite only ceremony on Sunday 5 May at Tuning Fork, Spark Arena at a show hosted by Suzy Cato - with awards presented by tamariki from across Aotearoa.

Palmerston North has an amazing line-up of events this May, thanks to the good folk at Palmy Bid, Music Planet and Manawatū Peoples’ Radio. There are over 50 gigs across all genres planned - read more about it on Stuff.co.nz here and check out the event guide here.

Ponsonby Social Club have announced their incredible NZ Music Month 2024 series, kicking off tomorrow night with Jaz Paterson on 2 May. Over the fourteen shows, they'll be showcasing stars of the Aotearoa music scene, with performers including Hollie Smith, Nathan Haines, Leonard Charles with Tyra Hammond & Bjorn, Haz & Milou and Rodney Fisher - and putting a spotlight on some stars of tomorrow with artists like Mols, Zola Nova, Ant Tarrant  and Hiri. Save the date! The NZ Music Month Summit is back for 2024, taking place at The Tuning Fork on Saturday 25 May. It’s free to attend but spaces are limited, so make sure to secure your ticket here.

Also this week … On 3 May Kumeu Art Centre are launching ‘Art on Record’, where member artists have been asked to create LP and album covers for real or imagined bands and SAE are hosting a Pacific Songwriting Workshop … 4 May sees Mike Harding - The Eketahuna Kid - celebrate his decades-spanning folk career kicking off his 70th birthday tour with a show at 4th Wall TheatreCambridge High School perform For Today, the high school musical packed with kiwi classics, from 1 - 4 May ... Nelson Libraries kick off their series of NZ Music Month concerts ... New Plymouth hosts the Uniquely Ngāmotu Sounds Showcase Series #3 NZ Music Month Special … and so much more!

Our Threads of Sound pop up will be open as part of Karangahape Road First Thursdays! The team will be down at 215 K Rd and from 5:00pm AS Colour will be onsite with an exclusive NZMM edition cap being created in front of your eyes - numbers are limited though, so be early to grab yours. The pop up exhibition will be open through until Sunday afternoon - and all the tees will be going up into our online Threads of Sound gallery. We'll be adding to the gallery all month, so head to over to our website and scroll down on the home page to see how to get your fav or classic NZ music tee added.
