Week 3
Under the leadership of the Orchestra’s Music Director and Conductor Mark Hodgkinson, the Canterbury Philharmonia will present an enjoyable afternoon of orchestral music, bringing together well known favourites and New Zealand repertoire. The concert opens with Douglas Lilburn’s Festival Overture, an early work that characterises the energy and rhythmic complexity that are a hallmark of Lilburn’s musical expression throughout his compositions.
At the heart of the concert is Schubert’s “Unfinished” Symphony, much beloved for its contrasts: memorable lyric melodies, at times dark, brooding atmosphere, and dramatic moments.
The programme also features Alec Mark, who will perform Saint Saëns’ Africa on piano, Sibelius’ Serenade No. 2 and Humoresque No. 5 on violin. As with Schubert’s symphony, these works convey a range of musical moods and tableaux.
