A new community piano has been set-up at the Gallery Patea in Taranaki. The 100 yr old piano was donated by the Mark and Geraldine Nicholas Whanau, who say that the piano’s history includes being played by legendary local figure, Dalvanius (a talented musician, whose accomplishments include producing his No.1 hit, ‘Poi E’).
The piano has been painted and partly lovingly restored by local Patea artists from the gallery - Mareta Marsters-Grubner, Dora Baker, Jenni Corbett, Bronwyn Wattrus and Gabrielle Belz. The local Patea Community Board has had the instrument tuned professionally and Hoopers Engineering provided the custom made trolley for transporting in and out of its proposed home at the local Four Square.
There are already plans being formulated to make use of the piano in Music Month performances over the coming weeks so - like the piano - stay tuned!
Meanwhile those in the area should also keep an eye out for the piano recital taking place at The South Taranaki Museum Aotea Utanganui on May 8th, which features curator Cameron Curd who happens to also be an experienced pianist.
