Tāmaki Makaurau-based musician Paul Cathro grew up in Dunedin, where he was involved in bands such as Biff Merchants & Alizarin Lizard before starting Ha the Unclear with his brother Michael.

Though he is best known for his work with Ha the Unclear, Cathro has regularly released music as a solo artist. His second full length album Catapult, (first album Head First Into Solid Ground released in 2016) is a collection of 11 quirky power pop anthems. Two singles have been released to date: ‘Distance’ in November 2024 (which made the 95bfm top 10 twice) and ‘No Life on Mars’ in March 2025.

Paul Cathro is joined by Joshua Worthington-Church (Princess Chelsea, Exploding Rainbow Orchestra) on bass, Charmain Keay (APO) on violin and Jamie Hannah (Spawts, Two Cartoons) on drums. Together, they deliver a high-energy sound that blends high energy guitar driven power pop

“Paul Cathro comes across like a Kiwi Jarvis Cocker; nerdy, awkward, anxious, overthinking, and capable of delivering some of the most skewed lyrical wonders. The music is also like a thrillingly adventurous mix of Pulp and another UK band Squeeze…” – PopLIb

Catapult was engineered at Mezzanine Studios by Edward Castello, mixed by Andrew Straight, and mastered by William Bowden and will be released in May 2025.
