Audioculture: The Capital’s Punk HQ Thistle Hall

Who would have guessed that a rather drab-looking two-storey construction, designed for a tea merchant in 1907, would go on to play a significant role in Wellington’s alternative music culture? By the time of Upper Cuba Street venue Thistle Hall’s 2007 centenary, it had hosted a mind-boggling array of events and become something of a cultural institution, but much of its past is coated in the grime of neglect and the constant threat of demolition.
