Boa Lanta are a Christchurch-based duo bringing the warmth, sensuality and groove of late-90s and early-2000s R&B into the present. Blending velvet-smooth vocals, rich live instrumentation and polished modern production, the project channels the feeling of a time capsule cracked open — nostalgic in spirit, but fresh in execution. Made up of vocalist Betty Barouni and multi-instrumentalist, producer and songwriter Fin Gilzean, Boa Lanta creates music that feels like it belongs somewhere between memory and now.
The project is the brainchild of more than 3 years of creative devotion, shaped by Fin’s production-led approach and Betty’s expressive vocal style and musicality. Fin, who is of New Zealand and British descent, has previously been involved in projects including Souldrop, gathering millions of streams. Betty, of Greek descent, is a Jazz vocals graduate from Ara Music Arts and an active performer within the New Zealand music scene, bringing both technical depth and natural charisma to Boa Lanta’s identity.
Inspired by artists such as Erykah Badu, Ladi6, Aaradhna, SZA and Cleo Sol, Boa Lanta’s sound reaches well beyond New Zealand, reviving the smoothness of 90s soul and R&B through a modern lens. Their latest single, Vines, is a perfect introduction: a sensual, groove-led retelling of Adam and Eve that captures the duo’s love of atmosphere, storytelling and irresistible melody.
