New Zealand’s indie pop/rock darling Jessica Leigh returns with ‘Pretty Please’ - the final single ahead of her forthcoming EP I WANNA BE A STAR, out June 5.
Co-written and co-produced with Adam Snow, ‘Pretty Please’ lands in a glossy indie-pop pocket - sparkly acoustic guitars sitting over lush, layered synths, anchored by rock-solid pop hooks.
Recorded between Mother’s Room and Auckland’s BIG FAN (founded by Joel Little), and mixed and mastered by Jules Evans (Eric Clapton, Simply Red, Steve Winwood), the track pairs polish with personality. At its core, ‘Pretty Please’ is sharply observant. It unpacks the isolation of feeling “othered” by beauty standards - watching other girls seem to meet them effortlessly, and wondering why you don’t. Running alongside that is a subtle sapphic tension, sitting in the blurred space between admiration and desire - not quite knowing if you want to be these girls or be with them. Leigh delivers it all with her signature diaristic, tongue-in-cheek writing style, balancing vulnerability with self-awareness.
The single follows a run of single releases and builds momentum toward I WANNA BE A STAR - a bold, five-track EP that captures Leigh at full tilt. Playful, self-aware and hook-driven, the project introduces her gritty guitar driven indie pop/rock sound concisely and confidently.
The EP will be celebrated with an intimate release show upstairs at BIG FAN - the same space where much of the project was created - alongside an international performance at New York City’s Bowery Electric.
Since her last EP, Leigh has been named a Rolling Stone “Artist to Watch” (2024), travelled to New York City for multiple writing camps and collaborations, and spent time in Sydney being mentored by ARIA Award-winning producers Adrian Breakspear and Liam Quinn. Back home in New Zealand, she continues to expand her role behind the scenes - stepping into sessions as a producer and building a growing catalogue of work with other female and LGBTQIA+ artists.
‘Pretty Please' will be available on all streaming platforms from May 15th.
