Indie-witch, Mikaela Cougar, turns emotional relapse into indie pop gold in new tune, ‘Still Mine’.
A catchy, lighthearted, indie-pop release, ‘Still Mine’ is about the emotional relapses that hit during the aftermath of a breakup. Short, sharp, and catchy, ‘Still Mine’ leans into a hook-driven pop structure, masking its deeper meaning beneath a carefree delivery.
At just 2 minutes 30 seconds, it’s a song that moves quickly, much like the emotional cycle it captures.
While ‘Still Mine’ leans further into pop than Mikaela’s previous releases, it still carries her signature quirky edge. Longtime collaborator Johnny Fleury, who features across much of Mikaela’s catalogue, adds textured guitar and Chapman Stick synths that subtly swirl through the track, keeping it distinctly gremlin, pixie, witch-friendly.
This track went on a journey and has 3 producers. Mikaela recorded the guitar and vocals in her bedroom over the drum loop you hear in the song today, adding layers onto it with Buzz Moller and then teaming up with Tom Broome to finish it off.
“This track is about those moments after a breakup where you think you’ve finally moved on, but then all of a sudden you find yourself back on your bedroom floor writing a song about it.” - Mikaela
Mikaela is from west Auckland, having released two EP’s to date Lucky Stars (2020) with song ‘Stupid Love Drunk’ landing itself on Apple New Music Daily and sophomore EP Streets Of My Mind (2024) with song ‘Outwit you’ going #1 on BFM radio, #20 on NZ Hot Singles and track ‘Can You Tell’ being a finalist in ‘Needle In The Hay’ songwriting comp.
With more recent singles from upcoming EP ‘The Brain Song’ going #7 on Radio One's Top 11 and ‘Pity Party’ going #2 on Radio One's Top 11, Mikaela is on a roll with so much more to come.
